Cooper Discoverer HTP LT 16" tires for my Big Horn

Well...I have gotten 5 years and about 30000 miles on the China Bombs on our 3055RL Big Horn. I did put the spare on last spring because one tire was looking a bit tired.

I was at Discount Tire today getting a truck tire fixed and talked with the manager about new LT tires for the Fiver. When I brought up LT vs ST tires, he told me they sell and install more LT tires on fivers than ST. We discussed the options...ranging from G114 GY's and Michelin Ribs to other brands and the above mentioned Coopers...In the end, after telling him I was not looking for cheap, he still recommended the much less expensive Cooper Discoverer HTP LT 16" tires...and he said they are made in the USA.

Has anyone had any experience with these tires? The 3042 pound rating per tire for these Coopers is easily within the confirmed loads on each axle of our Big Horn. Axle loads are under 5500 pounds per axle. The trailer will get similar miles put on it for the next 3 years so time and mileage will be well within design parameters. Any experienced opinions are welcome...not interested in a LT/ST debate

    To much siping to considered a good trailer tire. If you want a poly carcass tire look at the Bridgestone Duravis R500 HD.

    I have been running the Michelin LTX M/S2 on my fiver now for a year and I was told also they have too much siping in the tread. Maybe so but I cannot tell the difference when it is rolling down the road. It rolls well,it does not sway and after a full year and about 3000 miles on them they still look new and no uneven wear. I love these Michelins. I will buy them again. My last tires were Tacoma tires made in the U.S.A. and they came with the trailer and had a aggressive tread pattern that looked like off road tread and I still got 8 years before they even started to so small cracks. I also got my tires at Americas tires. Make sure you get them balanced. Good Luck

    I have had the same experience with the B.F. Goodrich Commercial TAs.
    Made in the U.S. by Michelin and with a slightly less aggressive tread pattern.

    ricatic, As stated above the BFG Commercial TA tires are a good tread pattern and I did like them a lot. They were about $750 mounted and balanced. They had a recall as while back and replaced them with the Michelin XPS. Michelin makes both of them. I made out when the swap was made as the XPS were $1330 mounted and balanced but it was an even trade. Good Luck on your choice. If you go with Cooper make sure they are made in USA. My hometown is Cooper's Home town. We put Coopers on our Blazer and they were made in Texarkana Arfkansas.

    Look at the Cooper SRM II they are for steer axel and trailer use. Have had them on my 5er for 3 years and they are doing fine. Will change them after 4 years just because.

    Have to agree with Chris on this one....Doesn't sound like the tire dealer covered all options, rick, if he included the RIBS into the discussion, why did you not choose them? Just curious.
