Difference in pulling

Hello community,

We are looking at stepping up from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel. We have looked at many different bunkhouse style trailers and are looking at either a Cougar 336bhs which is ~38' or a Montana 340 with is ~41'.

I have a 2013 RAM 3500 with 6.7L Diesel and AISIN transmission.

My question is will I notice a difference in drivability between the two? Turning, Start, Stop, Highway?

Thank you for your support!
  • I just went to from 32' 6" to 37', I have not noticed much difference.
Pull a bit further forward before backing.
Corners are not much difference. Just turn wide to figure out what you need.
Also, every foot longer makes every situation tighter, ie parking lots, gas stations and so on.
Montana High Country 340BH was on my short list. Literally it was between that trailer and the one I purchased. We never actually set foot in a 340 BH, but we did many other High Country models. We decided against it, due to length, but it would of been roomier inside.
  • Good evening.
My wife and I went from a 32' tt bunk house with 2 slides to a 40' bunk house 5er with 4 slides.
We noticed a big difference on the highway when the 18 wheelers buzz past there's no sucking in on the 5er. Even just riding down the road the ride is more comfortable not as bouncy or jerky.
Turning is a lot easier and as well as backing up but yes do need extra room.
Learning to back up was a bit of a curve but now that we figured it out its a lot eaiser.
As for breaking and stopping we haven't really noticed a difference.
Starting out from a stop isn't to bad but we were pulling before with a 2500 Mega Ram with the 5.7. Wasn't bad just took our time and got up to speeds pretty quick.
We just bought a 2016 diesel 3500 Big Horn so we will see how much of a difference that makes.
We bought the good Sam gps that you place all your trailer info in like height, weight, amount of propane, It helps with knowing bridge heights and all. Tho we still pay attention on our own but a little extra help is nice.
We haven't found any campgrounds that said we are to big but a few where we could only use the 30 amp service. No biggie there.
But overall we are glad we went to the 5er of the TT.
  • The biggest difference would be moving from TT to FW. 3' is not much difference. The heavier one will be more steady when semis come by.
  • @NWKomfort350 do you like the Open Range 367BHS? This one is on my shortlist, my problem is no deal in MN area has them to look at.
  • Hi, I don't know how far are you willing to drive but Burlington RV, in Sturtevant, WI might have in stock what you are looking for.

Yes, I had to drive 4 hours to see the one I bought, and the next closest was 12 hours away.

So far we love our Roamer 367.
We have spent 5 nights in it so far. We have only had one issue. We blew a furnace fuse. Popped in a new one, and all is well.
Another reason we opted for this over the High Country 340 is the 2 year Warranty that comes with the Roamer. I have read a lot of good reports of customer service.
We were trying to get the biggest, shortest trailer we could. :)
