Digital thermostat...

Experts, advise please.

This week added a second A/C to the 5ver...(one of those low
profile Coleman's 13.5 BTU's , Polar something...). Now think it
is time to make the switch to a digital thermostat. This new unit
is not ducted, and I did not opt for the heat strip.

questions..

1) am I married to using a Coleman digital thermostat (the other
unit in the main suite is a Coleman)?

2) any wiring problems or is the new thermostat just plug and play ?

3) must I now insure that I am using the 50 amp shore power connectivity cable when running both units ?

4) any "brilliant" insights as to recommended digital replacement thermostat is welcomed.

...please note... I am not an electrician..am sensitive... so be gentle.

observations...

- quieter in the bedroom with the new unit running then I would have predicted

- apparently, the standard of practice is to have the control knobs
facing the front cap of the unit... if I had a do-over , I would have flipped the unit around to have the "controls " facing rearward to allow for easier adjustability. (didn't think of that...with the bed
slider in it takes gymnastic flexibility and braille technique to operate the simple control dials). Fussy , I know.

- moved the Fantastique fan (2nd) to the latrine... should be okay, kind of overkill, except when chili is on the menu.

Wow ! Ken... have never heard that one. Will require re-training
the Princess i.e. manager of the thermostat. I will tread lightly.

What Ken wrote is accurate however...I did install the fan switch for those short periods (like dinner etc.) where the slower fan would make considerably less noise!

  • I have converted several trailers to the Hunter or equal digital T'stat. I think the modification to add a Low speed/High speed switch is a waste of time and effort.

Generally you should not run the A/C fan on Low speed as you are more likely to freeze the evaporator coil.

  • Thanks Steve... didn't even think to reference
    u-tube. Sometimes I am dense. :S

  • Good stuff Jerry. Thank you.

Probably more reasonable to stay with Coleman for the digital.

Good point on the fantast. fan.... don't want to risk spontaneous
    combustion. Heeeeeehehe !

  • Charles, you are right, there are more experts over in the tech forum.

I,m not an expert, but can give a little insight!

    1. I don't think you have to use a coleman digital, but it might make the wire swap more understandable.

    2. I'd say you just need to match the wire colors.

    3. Yes, you would need 50 amp hookup, to run both ACs at the same time, due to the fact you will have other draw as well. The converter, fridge, micro, elec WH, etc.

    4. Mine is Dometic, works well with my Dometic AC.

I don't think you would want to turn that front AC around, and controls could not be turned to the foot end.

Be sure to turn that fantastic fan off before flushing. It will pull air right out of the black tank!! Lol
