Disc brakes

Was thinking of going to disc brakes. Was wondering is one brand better than the next.
  • We just finished converting to disk brakes on my Dad's 34' HH Premier (heavy trailer). He went with Kodiak brakes and Dexter actuator. TV is a 12 Ram Dually.

After seating in the pads he finally settled on 3 boost with Heavy Hydraulic chosen on his EVIC. With the factory controller set on heavy electric he was set on 7.

He is amazed at how much better the disks work and wished he had done the conversion sooner.
  • I'm currently in the process of converting the brakes on our Carriage Cameo to disc. I just finished the wiring yesterday for the Titan Brakerite actuator. Today, I will be doing the swap over from the drum to disc. Next week, I will do the plumbing, connect it all and test. I can't wait to ditch the drums. I went with Kodiak for much of the same reason that Randu above mentioned. If you are interested, private message me and I will give you the name of the guy I'm getting everything through. Great knowledge and support. Good luck Phillip
  • Just posted this to the other thread but also applies to this one.

I've had both Dexter and Kodiak Disc and both use the Carlisle actuator. Dexter was factory installed on a 2004 Newmar Kountry Star and Kodiak factory installed on current 2008 Mobile Suites Trailer.

Both are very comparable in performance. Kodiak much easier to work on and pads readily available at any auto parts store. Pads way cheaper for Kodiak as Dexter runs $150 per axle where Kodiak closer to $30.00 per axle. I had problems on the Dexter' with pistons hanging up in calipers which led to uneven pad wear and replacement of caliper 1/2's. Very expensive as I had to get from Dexter direct.
Only known issue with Kodiak is that some have had a caliper hang up and not slide on sleeve and chew pads. Very easy fix to disassemble and grease sleeve.

Morryde does hundreds of brake conversions and use Carlisle actuators and Kodiak disc brakes. One could read something into that as far as cost and reliability. Randu
  • We chose Kodiak as parts are readily available, and yes, worth every penny! !
  • I'm thinking of converting also. I've already received an estimate from Mor Ryde....is it really worth it?

Where else would might I go to have this change done (drums to disks)
  • I've been looking into the same thing. You might want to check out my current thread. You have 3 axles, right? I'm glad I only have 2! Craig
