Discolored Propane tank door

I have a 2010 Montana Mountaineer and the propane tank access door has a discolored area of approximately 5" x 10" that is a tan/gold color. It appeared recently and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I do not know what it is and have tried to wax it out but that does not help.By the way the RV is white gelcoated.

I also have the left propane door with a brown spot. In late April I had the RV washed and waxed before leaving Texas. No problem noted then. I got back to Illinois and parked 6 weeks with that side being north. June 23 I pulled it about 35 minutes and parked it under trees with the door on the south side but the awning also shaded it most days. But before July 4th the Brown color had appeared. My first thoughts was diesel exhaust being deposited? I pulled it 2 more times (about 50 miles each) before trying to clean but watched the spot and it may have gotten a little darker. I have since pulled another 5 hours and seems unchanged and does not buff out by hand.

My spot on the propane door also just appeared this season, Will not wax or buff out, seems to be under the gloss coat. I think I will end up calling or writing Montana "Keystone" and ask about the problem. I will post if I find anything out, but suspect I will get no info or help.

  • I believe on the Montana Owners site I have seen others talk about this discoloring. So I don't think it is just you.
Maybe check there - search for Montana owners website.
  • I had that happen on both baggage doors on my 2011 Montana. One was replaced under warranty, the other was after warranty ran out. Didn't seem to hurt anything/ just looked bad. Seems they had a bad batch of doors. JT.

Pretty sure that didn't happen, the dis-colorization does not seem to be on the surface, it seems to be under the outer gloss coat or wax. Although trying to rub it out is unsuccessful.

Have you ever had a propane leak.....blow on door?

May be parked where truck mirror reflected sun onto door?
(Seen this cause vinyl siding melt on a house)

    Post a picture..........

HERE is info on how to post one

I saw a funny car body nearly catch fire from sunlight reflected off the team's hauler truck, with that pressed diamond-pattern aluminum skin. Left a smoking blister about 2" across by the time they moved the body. They were =not= happy, to say the least. ;-)

I have not had a propane leak, and although the whole side of the RV is exposed to the East sun it is shaded from approx noon on. I will post a picture later today when I get back home. Thank you for your help.
