We have a '12 Chevy 2500 gas. It came with 2 batteries- local small size dealer who had it new on their lot can't explain why.
From what I have read in a few places, one is dedicated to engine starting, the other to the 7 pin trailer connector (snow plow prep package, I have learned). Alternator charges both.
Secondary benefit? I can jump start myself :) This past fall my starting battery (5 years old) crapped out. Just took jumper cables from one to the other and away I went.
