I had the same issue when we bought our Excel in 2012. I had a 2012 GMC 3500 at the time and the integrated controller would not work with the trainer's disc brakes. The Excel dealer installed the magnets and it worked like it was supposed to do. Not a problem in the 3 years we had that truck. The 2015 GMC'S corrected that issue but I left the magnets in place and it still works just fine. I have no experience or knowledge of the adapter so can't help you there.

I also bought from Stop Your Trailer. It was right around $1500 for my trailer also. I had a friend help me and it took us a few hours to install. The part that took the longest was running the brake lines and wiring to the pump. I do have an exhaust brake and that is not a replacement for going to disc brakes. I did have to buy a new brake controller that was compatible with hydraulic brakes. I have the clear dust covers over my wheel bearings but have them greased with a zerk fitting instead of the oil bath.

Best thing I have done for my camper, no more squealing, grabbing and constant adjustment of the brake controller.

We just came back from another cross country trip this time with disc brakes and even my wife noticed the difference. Those 8-9% downhill sections went by uneventfully.

Yes many people on this forum will come back and say get an exhaust brake instead. Sure an exhaust brake would be of equal help but there is more to braking than just slowing down on steep stretches. Exhaust brakes don't eliminate that jerkiness and occasional locking up that traditional drum brakes can exhibit when overheated or wet.

I just had disc brakes installed at the shop which is detailed in that link, cost $2600 for all parts and labor. I have too little experience and too many years of life to do the installation myself. I made the decision to have the work done there on the basis of this web article to which the link leads.

We have just one problem. This fine system is not compatible with the GM Integrated Trailer Brake Controller in my 2008 Duramax/Allison Chevrolet, even though I was assured that it would. I have three options (that I am aware of) to solve this problem:

1> Install an after-market controller such as the Tekonsha P2 or P3

2> Install an adapter, HBA-CAM which is available for about $85

3> Wire magnets inline to "fool" the ITBC

As information to any who are considering a upgrade to disc brakes with a GM truck, here is what I have learned:

GM official position is that their ITBC is designed for electric brakes and not for electric over hydraulic systems.

There are work-arounds. I will report back on the solution I have found--I am still working on it and will appreciate any feedback on this forum. Please help!

Our MS came equipped with disk brakes, they're GREAT! Sorry I can't help with the conversion end of it but once you have disks you'll NEVER go back to drums!

As for the oil bath hubs DRV offered it when our unit was built, they no longer do due to reasons stated above. We have the oil bath hubs, so far they've been good for us but time will tell.

This is the price I got from "Stop your trailer"
about a two years ago.

Mounted the Pump, ran all the brake lines (hard lines)

and wiring while still using the trailer.

Swapping the hubs and adding the flex lines only took one day.

Trailer weighs 14020 pounds fully loaded. Disk brakes make
a tremendous difference.

This is a fairly easy change. Running the brake lines was the boring part. Price, I'm sure has gone up and may vary depending on what axles you have

I want disk brakes sometime soon.

If you are fairly mechanical you can do the install yourself. Most of the complete kits use a lot of rubber brake lines which can lead to problems. I would only use mostly hard brake line but that raises the skill level required to do the job.
