Distance between truck bumper and 5th wheel? Anderson Hitch

I just installed an Anderson Ultimate 5th wheel rail mount hitch. Both the hitch and hitch pin converter are both in the forward position which puts ball about 48" behind truck cab. Reese rails call for gooseneck ball at 52" behind cab (putting it about 4" in front of axle).

NOTE: Reese rails installed per instructions....32 1/2" from rear of truck bed forward to rearmost of rear rail.

With this set up the truck bumper is about 19" from the 5th wheel (front storage doors). Is this OK?

How can I tell if it will hit rear truck corners/bumper corners during sharp turns? Is there a preferred distance from 5er to tow vehicle bumper entire rig is straight in a line?

Top of truck bed to bottom of fifth wheel is 7" clearance.

The Anderson hitch and the hitch pin converter can both be rotated 180 degrees. If I rotate just the hitch the goosneck ball would then be about 2"-3" behind axle, giving me additional clearance between 5er and truck. Is the 2"-3" behind axle OK?

My truck is a long bed, crew cab

Thoughts?

  • You can measure from the center of the ball to the corner and from the center of the ball straight back to the bumper. Subtrack the smaller number from the larger one. If the difference is less than the number you already posted you will be fine. Chris
  • Why don't you just take a tape measure and measure the distance from the Anderson ball to the cornor of the truck bumper. Then measure from the King Pin adapter to the 5ver. If that distance is longer you are good to go.

I don't have a Anderson I have a Curt reg. fifth wheel hitch. I just measured my distance and it is 21 1/2 inches bumper to fiver. You might be o.k. I would take it out and make a slow turn while someone is walking beside you to watch the clearance. If it clears you should be o.k. Just my thought.
