Remember new refrigerators sit in storage for months, maybe years with the doors closed before installation. Never a smell. Why? Because they are CLEAN! The odors come from minute particles of dirt, food, etc. that harbor bacteria that can grow in the dark warmth of a closed non running refrigerator. That is also why there are no odors with the refrigerator running- that bacteria can't grow in the cold. The solution is to thoroughly clean and then thoroughly clean again the refrigerator before closing it up.
