You all don't get it! The OP has NO room to open the door at all when the slide is retracted. It's hard to imagine that the refrigerator would butt right up to the island, but I suppose it's possible.
With that scenario ... the refrigerator pushed up so close to the island the doors CANNOT open.... even a little bit ... what's the alternative! Sounds like THAT is what the OP is asking?
I have never been able to turn a refrigerator completely off, even after cleaning it, then shutting the door tight for more than just a few hours before odors start forming.
