Does trailer connector need to be in pick up box

I've used the bumper receptical for many years without problem, mostly because I've not gotten around to putting one in the bed. I run an adjustable strap from hook to hook inside the lower tailgate. To that I attach the emergency brake cable and bungee the umbilical cord. That way any excess remains in the bed instead of over the tailgate, but still allows movement for turns.
