Does trailer connector need to be in pick up box

I've put in bed connectors in both of my trucks. Takes 30 minutes and cost about $50 for a pigtail that will work both the bumper mount and in bed. Personal preference I guess. Just make sure you cord is long enough. I've seen people in CG's make tight turn and it ripped the cord from the camper...not pretty.
