Does trailer connector need to be in pick up box

Getting a new f250. On my past two trucks, I have had a 7 pin connector inside the pick up truck box. The 5th wheel trailer I now have has the Reese Revolution hitch (similar to the Sidewinder). I ...

Last Summer I had a connection go bad on my in-bed plug, so I used the bumper plug until we got home. As above, I cable tied a ring to the cord and used a bungie to keep the extra in the back corner of the box to prevent dragging.
