Double cabinet doors

All of our double cabinet doors are tight when you close them. There is not enough clearance in between. Is there an easy way to improve the clearance with out planing the doors, with out moving hinges and leaving holes or having holes so large the screws will not hold.

I thought about moving hinges up on one side and over a tad. But don't know if I can find putty to fill holes to match stain. Also the hinges will be in even from side to sid.

Any suggestions.

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I did one this morning and it is much better. I have 5 more to do.
  • A lot of hinges will have slotted holes to allow for vertical and horizontal adjustments. Just have to loosen up the screws on the door, bump it sideways, then retighten. I like the idea of using a shim between the doors, too.

  • I had one kitchen cabinet that seemed to get tighter. I loosened all the screws in the hinges a little, put a thin piece of cardboard between the doors, as I closed them. While the cardboard held them apart, I tightened the screws back up. It will now clear without touching.

If they are the exterior mount type you can "bump" them to slightly bend the hinge back.

Close one door (not enough to engage the catch) then bump it with the palm of your hand against the edge to push the door towards the hinge slightly... then do the other door. (repeat as necessary) You should be able to achieve a perfect fit if done carefully.

This has worked for me on several previous trailers.

    Hope that makes sense.

I owned and operated a custom cabinet shop for 30 years...above is right on. Humidity will change the situation too depending on where you are.
(we quit using that type of hinge years ago but it is common place in RVs because of cost)

  • I have a few that are tight and will usually take the time to close them together at the same time as I usually have them open. You might check to see if the screws for the hinges and catches are tight as mine will loosen. If any cant be tightened due to the hole being a bit big, stick a wood toothpick or two and break them off in the hole first which will help.

Having built cabinets in the past and done some wood working my preference to make adjustments would be to get a small dowel, drill the hole first and then glue a short piece of dowel in the holes. Then when set dab a small amount of stain on the dowel to closely match your wood. Mark and Pre drill where the new holes will go and reinstall. You probably will be the only one to notice what you did.
