I had the same problem with my Reese 16k hitch. Checked everything, pull tested, eye tested, locked handle. Everything fine, started to pull out of Camping World lot and "BANG" tailgate bowed and side rails dented. Found out When I got to Florida that 16k was known to do this. Reese says that it is always user fault.
Switched to a PullRite and no problems at all.
