The curious part of the description is doing the pull test and listening for the teltale "clunk". There shouldn't be that much play in the jaws. When I do mine, I feel the resistance of the trailer in the handling of the truck but there isn't any particular sound to listen for.
Mine is an 18K reese with the wrap around jaw but the inlaws have the clam style jaws and they don't have enough movement for any appreciable clunking.
Also, in reference to the teflon disks people use: they work great for the surface but the kingpin itself still needs lube to prevent wear on the jaws and the pin.
