Duallies are not needed for trailers under 16k gvw and to suggest otherwise is based on emotion. Then if one needs a dually they should consider 450 series trucks that are designed to be duallies rather than an add-on. The new 350 series SRW,with OEM suspension options, trucks are more than adequate for less the 16K gvw 5th wheels and them's the facts. Don't forget duallies are not good in parking lots, small city streets, ice/snow, most garages and off-road, so why live with those inconveniences when it not needed.
Agree with NC Hauler. Having lived in North Dakota and now South Dakota, I can assure you that none of my duallies (2003 Chevy 3500, 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 and now 2011 Ford F350) have had any real, leave me stranded or in the ditch, problems with ice or snow. One does drive for conditions, not the speed limit, which is probably best for any vehicle in less than ideal conditions.
Noting that you are a senior member, with time on this forum since 2002, then you will surely recognize my biggest complaint with this dually versus SRW debate.
And that is there are a whole slew of folks who want to get the biggest trailer they can, but at the same time the smallest tow vehicle.
So one ends up with folks who have a short bed, crew cab F-250 and they are wondering why it won't handle that Mobile Suites fifth wheel they love. Cause gee, they got a big truck, an F-250!
The big debate should not be SRW versus dually, it really should be matching the correct truck for any certain sized trailer.
If one needs a dually then, fine. If not, that is also fine. But at the least, and in the interests of safety, their truck and fiver are matched up and not overloaded.
