Excessive Wear on Catch Plate! Help?

HW attached the capture plate to my pin box. The plate is needed for sliding hitches. The area showing wear is the underside of the plate, just behind where the plate has a bolt pressure-contacting the puck. The steel box around/protesting the bolt is showing the wear... loss of over 1mm of steel with only 3,000 miles is a concern. I suspect something is off & am confident Pullrite will have a recommendation once I send them the photos.

I guess I'm glad for everyone else that it isn't so common that others had experience with it.

Lesson Learned: when a 5thW with a capture plate goes in to the shop for maintenance... the shop may not use the right equipment to move the RV. The 'standard' equipment can cause the damage that happened to mine. The fellow from Pullrite also spotted that one side of the locking bolt (which attaches the plate to the king pin) had been shorn off. On the plus side, the rig was still safe to take on the road. On the down side, the plate will be tougher to get off the RV & there was enough stress to mis-align the plate relative to the pin box.

Next up - getting a new capture plate in place.

I can't understand what part is wearing. I'm not familiar with that hitch.
Did you buy the hitch new at HW? Was there any assembly required by HW? I can't think of anyone I would trust less than them to assemble anything.

Pullrite specifies WD-40.

You need to use a better lubricant.
WD40 is no where near robust enough to prevent wear.

I've used pullright and loved it. Mine was the one that had the bars lubricated with slip plate. I decided to also put slip plate on pin and capture plate. Today I have a B&W hitch and I'm still using slip plate on pin and hitch jaws. Stops wear and no dirt problems.

Have you been lurbricating the capture plate before hooking up? When I used one I always sprayed some lubricant just before hooking up.

That is a lot of wear for the way that hitch is designed. I would defiantly be calling Pullrite to try and figure out what is going on.

I had a PR and capture plate for a previous FW. Difficult to determine without photos, but I would suspect a small bit of rubbing whenever you hitch and unhitch. If you think it's excessive contact PR to discuss.

Contact Pullrite and ask them about the wear on your capture plate.
