Exhaust brake thoughts

Anybody using an aftermarket exhaust brake on their third generation Ram Cummins? I'm considering having one installed on my 05. Are there any specific brands that are the best. Any issues with transmission?

  • My Cummins is an older version but the Pac brake on has been there for years and works great and coordinates with the Allison trans.
  • I've had the PacBrake for most of my trucks life and it works great.
My only regret was I didnt get it even sooner.

If you have an auto, some extra work is required to keep it locked up during decel.
Well worth doing and very doable with your model year.

Starting in 2006 the transmission and computer were upgraded to be fully exhaust brake capable without any modification.
  • I had a 2004 Ram CTD and could not install an exhaust brake because of the 48RE transmission. There was a transmission change shortly after that but I don't remember exactly when.

I installed a PacBrake on our 2nd Gen Ram 2500 5 speed manual. It is awesome very seldom use service brakes on down grades. I would also strongly suggest the turbo mounted unit, that is what I got.
  • On my previous 2007 Ram 5.9 CTD I installed the PacBrake PRXD and was VERY happy with it and it worked flawlessly for 5 years. Truck was a 4 speed auto. Bought off e-bay from a guy called chucksahunter and he is a good e-bayer.
  • Banks is quality but WAYYYYYY overpriced! PacBrake or BD are quality but at a reasonable price.
  • Bought mine from BANKS 2 years ago, have not had a problem. We have a 2006 F-350 and pull a 36' Montana. Good Luck, and Happy Camping !!
