My 19 Ram 3500 SRW diesel has 4552# for payload. It would easily handle the weight of that 5th wheel. BUT!, I'd still want a DRW because at almost 42' long and over 15,000 lbs loaded IMO it would be a load for an SRW truck. Factor in a cross country trip with more than the usual amount of stuff and the truck will be loaded to the gills. A DRW would just make life really comfortable while on the road.
As far as gas vs diesel goes. Don't even give a gas truck a peek. Buying a diesel truck for that 5er isn't about needing to get 300,000 miles on it to justify it. It's about having to not hear the gas motor scream all day. If you want a comparison then go test drive a big 38' class A gas and see how you like it.
