Another vote for dually. You are looking at 3500-4000lb just for the pin weight. Add in the family and other gear in the truck and payload is the driving factor.
I would also lean toward diesel at that size. At that size, you are going to be really winding up the engine in mountains and going slow. Assuming it's in good condition, it should survive it but you will really notice at that size.
FYI - we switched from diesel to gas and normally lean toward gas but we have pulled 7500-10000lb units. We had an 12,000lb 5er for a short while and every overpass in Nebraska and it was downshifting. At that size, I would be going diesel.
Also, are you looking at a new truck or a used truck? The older you go, the more getting the dually will be important as the ratings have really jumped in recent years.
