F250 or F350 to Haul a 5th Wheel???

Hello-

I would appreciate your advice on the size of truck to haul a 5th wheel.

We are about to purchase our first 5th Wheel (2018 Jayco Northpoint 377RLBH with GVWR 16750) for a multi-state 6month trip around the country with my wife and 2 daughters.

We are new to 5th wheels, but experienced campers/RVers.

We are looking for advice for the type of truck to safely haul this beast.

We've narrowed down to Ford.

Would you recommend an F350 or would an F250 be safe to haul up and down the mountains? Gas or diesel?

Thank you in advance!

  • That weight is clearly dually territory.

My 5er has 15K GVWR. I have a SRW but I wouldn't go any higher and I don't max out the weight.

Nearly 2K higher is definitely six wheel and no doubt diesel.

  • Myself I'd get a gas 350 single. Don't have to fight the hips of a dually around town. Save about 750 lbs with the 7.3 motor. Diesel makes sense if you'll put 300,000 miles on the motor otherwise the upfront costs/maintence costs are just to much.
  • Definitely an F350 dually diesel. No question.

Are there many places to RV on a 1000 square mile island?? Just curious.
  • Not all 250s are equal. Same with 350s. But at a max 17000 pounds, no question…350.
  • My older F350 SRW would be maxxed out if the FW was loaded to its 16,000 gross. You're definitely in one ton range, and you'd be better off with a dually.
  • Your going to want a diesel to pull the load in the mountains. And your going to NEED a Dual Rear Wheel truck to carry the LOADED pin weight. That trailer could be around 4K for a fully loaded pin, plus the 4 people & stuff in the truck.
  • With that weighty out will need a one ton vehicle. If you insist on a Ford, a 450 would be a better option. Check out a RAM 3500, when a truck gets picked as “car of the year”, they are trying to tell you something!,
  • The answer is so obvious, it may be a troll post??

Okay...the obvious answer is the 350, and with 3 girls on a long trip, you will need a 350 with 6 wheels.

No question, the diesel is also an obvious choice!
