Feedback from the community on newbie questions

Hi everyone! I would like to get some feedback from the community, on upcoming RV related decisions.

History- my wife and I sold our home after 15 years, and moved to Colorado. We are currently renting. My wife is a traveling RN (not home 60% of the time, and I work from home (95% of the time) in the software business. We are 90% sure now would be a good time to go FT RVers, at least for the next year or so. This had been a dream, and we are now in a position to physically and financially move forward with it. Points I could use feedback from - and yes I know everyone will have a different answer :-)

- Toy Hauler. Voltage 3895 is what we are looking at. We looked at a dozen, and the TH / Voltage 3895 just appear to fit the build. Washer, bigger master bath, half bath, area for office, place for 2 large dogs, build quality, etc. Sure the New Horizons and FT haulers are nice, but as my first? Also need to buy a truck, so I don't want to blow the budget. As we have 2 retrievers, the garage is nice. And I can convert the garage into an office for the next year.

- I am buying a new truck. My 2001 Toyota Tacoma was a great one, but our next home we will need a full size. We are country people- so a truck is a part of life! Personally leaning very heavily toward the new 2013 Ram 3500 Mega cab, as the new frame is touted at towing 30K lbs! Plus I love the Cummins. Question is Dually or not? Yes I will be using it FT for at least a year, hauling monthly from site to site. Maybe even spending the winter at one or two sites. So how much will I really be using the dually? And the dually will also be my daily driver. So give the beefy frame of this new 3500 truck, and the 5% of time I will be towing, is the dually the right answer?

- 2 Dogs. I will really have no choice but to haul them in the 5th wheel, unless we get a trailer. And at 40 feet, at for FT use for 1 year, a trailer wont cut it. I really need a separate vehicle when I get to the destination for airport and local work runs. So a mobile is not on the list. The Dodge Mega Cab might have the room in the back seat to accommodate.

  • You will be a lot happier with a dually-

Dogs in the trailer is fine and a whole lot safer.
  • Welcome to the forum.

We like our Voltage as do most people who own them. One or two here will tell you that they are c**p.

Definitely dually. That's a big trailer.

It's probably different where you are, but where I live even though they call that 2013 Ram a 3500, it's in 4500 class and would require a higher drivers license. I've already upgraded my license because of the weight of my 5er. I know some will try to tell me I'm wrong, but like I said, where I live, it's true.
  • Welcome aboard! Don't for get to check out the Full Timers Forum here too, a lot of good knowledge and experience. I know over the years of several traveling RN's that have done the same thing. Seemed to work out well, many hospitals had basic hook up's too I've read.

I would suggest the dually that Voltage 3895 is over 42' of trailer with a hitch weight of over 3,000#.

As for the dogs, ours road in our Raptor and did just fine. In many ways probably more relaxed back there then in our truck, but at the time we had 2 kids. If I didn't have kids I'd have them in the truck so I didn't have to run the AC for them on hot days.
