Quite rare but it does happen. There is a lot of float plane traffic in my part of the world and some of them have amphibious floats (floats that contain retractable landing gear). Every few years someone takes off from land, forgets to retract the gear then lands on the water. The next day you might see a newpaper picture of an upside down pair of floats, floating in the water with the landing gear sticking up.
I once tried to drive a VW camper into my garage with the pop top up. Fortunately the only casualty was the canvas.
