I just replaced my manual adjusting brakes with "forward self adjusting" brakes. However, while still operating with manual brakes, I followed the maintenance schedule that was listed in the "Towable RV Master Manual" by Lippert components.
"Adjust brakes to proper operating clearance every three months or 3000 miles, which ever comes first".
We drove 10,000 miles this summer, and every 3K, I'd adjust the brakes. I was surprised how much adjustment was needed after just 3K. I'm not sure why they recommend every three months though. I wouldn't think the adjustment would change if the brakes weren't being used frequently.
I have had several folks tell me that you don't need to adjust them until you have no more adjustment in your electronic brake controller!
