The manufacturers boost the payload ratings just about every year, so a newer truck will have a higher load rating than the same truck of several years earlier. Of course, many people simply exceed the truck rating, knowingly or not.
There should be a tire and loading tag on the drivers side door post with something like "cargo and people should not exceed xxxx pounds".
