Hi Rod
I am in a similar position to you. Also from Qld and intending to visit the US (for over 12 months) and would love to purchase and bring a Fifth Wheeler/tow vehicle with me.
I have read some of the replies and can help with some information. Wiring - Australian Standards (for 240 Volt) will be the same as for a house I suspect - I found this information at:
http://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/content/advice/2011/rv-electric-wiring-24723
Import duty. If your only staying int he US six months then this may not apply but if you stay 12 months (and then visas become the issue but not unsolvable) you can import your truck and RV as personal items - see this link. Note there is a limit of 1 every 5 years - in my case the wife will own the tow vehicle and I the RV.

Left hand/rear door: its a problem and I agree with other responders that very few US 5th Wheelers have left or rear doors. We particularly like the new Keystone Montana with a front lounge that may lend itself to a rear door or w reversal of slide outs - see this link as an example:

I was just about to write to Keystone to see what they maybe able to do during manufacture as well as ask operator in the US/Australia conversion industry what would be possible
Weight of tow vehicle may also be an issue (I am yet to resolve) but I have been looking at a Chev Silverado 3500 with the V8 Diesel/Allison gearbox (brand new top of the range is about $US65,000 compared to nearly $AUD100,000 for used models back home) and am about to write to see if its possible to convert (and an idea of cost) to RH drive in Australia and what is the maximum towing capacity.
If we can resolve this the length may require a medium rigid licence but for my past sins I just happen to have one of those. And with my licence my wife is allowed to drive "under instruction" as a learner
I have just tried to join the Australian Fifth Wheel RV network without success (hopefully its a timing issue) but I have identified Australian suppliers/converters (mainly in Victoria) who I am hoping can provide information that will help me through this project.
I completely understand the reasons most do not go down this road but the savings are worth at least investing some time.
If this is helping and you would like to share research, that works my end.
