Hi Rod,
At this stage our plan is to go to the US before returning home - happy to chat when I get back but it maybe years away. I have sent you a private message but when I think it through maybe this is the best place to exchange general information as others maybe aware of information we are not and can add to the discussion.
I have written to 2 Australian conversion companies and received responses. For the Fifth Wheeler (and we had first thought we would like a larger new vehicle - 39 feet) the cost to ship home and convert through to registered in Australia was in the order of $125K aussie. The only other cost would be the US purchase - the one we like was going to be about $90K aussie. The tow vehicle (again a new large one) would be about $90K Aussie (brand new) and conversion back home about $45K.
All up it would cost me initially $AUD180K to make the purchases in the US and another $170K to get them home and on the bitumen in Australia - At $350 all up we will now see where we can shave some costs - we had originally allowed $250K based on some earlier research on second hand equipment so its back to the drawing board.
Since I last wrote I have had contact with the Australia fifth wheeler association and once my membership is through I will look to see if any of their members have been down this road (no pun intended)
Cheers
Paul
