Hi Paul,
Initially Cath and I were looking at purchasing a Cougar 338PAT. There are several on the market (new from between $40K and $65K USD). I figured if I purchased around $45K (around $58K AUD). I could land it here in OZ around $70K AUD. I've been quoted from $10K to $12K to ship from California to Brisbane.
I would then have to convert Left Hand Door (approx. $3K AUD), 240V power-points. I believe the wiring is compliant on this model for 240V but would have to put Australian compliant Power-point. ( not sure of cost).
LPG to Aust standards. I think this is just piping. I am a motor mechanic and licenced Automotive LPG installer by trade, so no problem there for me.
Worst part is the Cougar 338PAT weighs over 4.5 Tonne. Meaning...... I believe we have to fit air-brakes to it. Not a huge job, but components could be costly. I figure around $5k to 6K AUD for air brake components. I could do the fitment myself.
Cath and I were planning on going to cruise the Mediterranean late next year. Cruise the Atlantic, land in Florida. Purchase a Cougar 338PAT fifth wheel. Hire, Rent or buy a tow vehicle. Cruise around the country for a month or two. Then hit the docks in California and ship our fifth wheel back to Brisbane.
I know there is a lot of detail to drill down into. As I do, I am finding more and more "unexploded mines" to defuse. Whilst I don't have an enormous amount of cash to splash. I do have time and mechanical expertise and connections to assist me on my quest.
I am sure there are others whom have considered similar. Please stay in touch Paul. You have been most helpful so far. It would be great to catch up with you for a coffee one day.
Cheers, Rod.
