Hi Paul,
For air brakes to your tow vehicle you need a kit also. Compressor, tank, lines and control valves. Not too sure of the cost. Probably around 5KAUD Installed.
You are correct about the width issue. But with careful planning, you can recess the awning. On the model we are looking at there are two (2) awnings. One awning is at the rear. We will probably recess the awning on the side, or maybe try to mount it on the roof(is possible) or worst case scenerio..... remove it and use the one at the rear.
The costs you are quoting are probably pretty close. As you would be getting the RV business to do all of the leg-work. I see it as a bit like an owner builder. Home builders build homes for a living. Owner builders build their own homes usually because they want to save money, or they have the time and expertise to do so. I have been an owner-builder before, and it is not a daunting a task as what a lot of people think.
However converting a fifth wheel would be a lot different. If you did all the research and legwork yourself, I am sure you will save many thousand of dollars. As I have said previously, I am fortunate with my expertise and time, so I am trying to find out how big the sand pit is over OZ compliance issues, and what is the best ways to navigate them.
Many Thanks, Rod..
