Filon Esterior VS Gel coated fiberglass

Still in the process of determining which unit to buy. Got the floor plan and all else including weights figured out. Now for some additional details. Looking for the difference between Keystone Outback Gel Coated Fiberglass and Keystone Laredo Gel Coated Filon Exterior. Both Keystone reps have been great, just want some other opinions and / or experience. Thanks Jeff

  • Filon is harder to keep clean. After time, it seems to be a bit porous and starts to mildew. I had a filon unit and after a couple years I was constantly trying to keep it clear. My present fiver is gel coat, but I did not notice the entrance door was filon. I am now having to use bleach on it every three months or so regardless of how much I try to keep it waxed. I agree with previous poster - - go for the best - - go with full gel coat.
  • Just for clarification - and maybe I'm wrong - but I think it is all gel coat filon. There are different grades of filon, of which Keystone offers standard filon and a high gloss gelcoat which is just a thicker layer of gelcoat over the filon with a higher gloss finish.

Exterior finish is one of my pet peeves - so I would go for the highest grade finish you can. I've had Keystone products with standard filon, and with high gloss option. The high gloss always looked better (shined like a mirror in fact) and the graphics adhered to it much better than regular filon. Just make sure the cabinet doors are also high gloss or they will degrade differently than the rest of the coach. There are a lot of 2007 era Rvs out there with yellowed cabinet doors compared to the rest of the exterior.

Of course then there is full body paint, which we now have and it is awesome!
  • JMO but filon screams 'cheap'. If costs are cut with the visible siding, where else are they being cut? It will take plenty of something like 303 to keep filon looking as good as it is going to look & prevent the chalking.

There is something out there for everyone. Some are happy with the basics. For some only the very best will do. Somewhere inbetween the rest of us reside.
  • Me Again, what do you mean about boats not being built with filon, not to be sarcastic, I am not planning on an ocean cruise??? and what about the wood, most trailers have wood paneling on the inside, I have had for over 18 years and all seems ok. thanks again, Jeff
  • Filon owner here. I'd rather have an all fiberglass wall, assuming it doesn't have the luan paneling the filon always has. The more we can get away from wood in the structure, the better IMO.
  • Never been a boat with Filon Exterior!!!!! I like my Gel Coated Cardinal! Chris
