Pickup trucks are really hard press to exceed Federal Bridge Weight Laws, which state regs are modeled after. Tires are the limiting item is most 2500/250 trucks.
Some states like Washington license tonnage, and one has to assure that you are paying for enough in those states. My 2500 RAM is licensed for 12K based on the states formula! I am good to go up to the amount as long as I do not exceed the tire ratings.
GVWR and GCWR are both manufacturers numbers that effect warranty more than anything else.
