Since this discussion has gone a bit sideways around the topic of exceeding your GVWR. I will bet a fine glass of scotch that the vast majority of drivers of all passenger cars, SUVs and trucks have no idea what their GVWR is or the payload number on their tire sticker.
My Escape has a payload of 1000lbs and will seat 5. You put 4 good size adults, a child and the back full of luggage and you'll exceed that. How many summer vacationers heading out on their 2 week summer vacation exceed their GVWR. THOUSANDS!!! Do they know or care? Nope.
The only time I would think GVWR or other ratings would be challenged would be in commercial applications and worker safety where death or injury resulted. Businesses need to follow the rules a lot differently than the regular Joe. All about the "due diligence".
