For those of you that have fireplaces do they really heat well?

Ours works extremely well. Got a second small heater for when it's really cold as I hate the furnace cycling on when it's too cold and then not turning off until it's too hot. Don't use it unless there's a hard freeze and we've got to keep water lines from freezing.
