For those of you that have fireplaces do they really heat well?

Ask them.....They are very easy to remove...When you purchase a unit, you should have a manual for just about everything that has been installed in the unit. I have a pamphlet for mine and it shows install and removal....If you remove it, you have a "hole" where the fireplace was located....may want a "back-up" plan before you remove the unit .....
