Fresh water tanks....Can they be Black in Color?

My new to me Toyhauler (see sig) has four plastic tanks as follows:

1 - Black tank (40gal)
1 - Gray tank (35 gal)
2 - Fresh water tanks that are connected by a flexible piece of hose. These tanks are supposed to be 60 gals each.

NOTE: ALL tanks above are black in color (black plastic).

Question:
Aren't fresh water tanks supposed to be white/milky white/white translucent in color? Never paid much attention to the color of my other RVs fresh water tanks.

Thanks
  • mine were black ABS, made a repair. Don't know the new ones, all covered up.
  • Pretty common to have black tanks. You dont really want light in your tank as that promotes growth of bad things.

I have yet to see a toyhauler with 100+gal of fresh water that has black/grey tanks that will hold ALL of it. Not sure why some believe that is the case. My tanks are 150/50/50 gal.
  • I'd be more concerned you have 120 gallons of fresh water on board and only 75 gallons available to store it in black/gray tanks. Something is going to overflow most likely, if you don't keep an eye on things. And of course, tank level sensors never function well or accurately.
  • Yes, some fresh water tanks are black abs, but most are translucent polyethylene.

Seems odd to have only 35 gal gray tank, with that much fresh water available.

mine have always been white, etc. but if they are made of food grade materials, don't think the color matters. could hide algae build up if black however.
