Fridge in slide-outs?

This is one reason we got rid of the fiver!

We have a single door 10cf Norcold refrigerator in a slide. It has 2 vents. We purchased a wireless thermometer set which will monitor both the freezer and the refrigerator. Ours runs within normal specs and interestingly it cycles just like the frost free residential fridge in our garage. The RV fridge is not frost free but the cooling fins in the refrigerator do run through a defrost cycle almost every day so with the wireless thermometer we can see this. We can even set it to alarm when it raises abive a set temp. So if you want some peace of mind, you might go the wireless thermometer route.

Insulate the slide walls and install a baffle at the top vent, mount two 12V fans in back to move air. Install a fan inside the fridge to circulate air and your unit will cool just fine. Harder to vent fridge in slides.

One of my slide out vent fans failed and then the thermistor that controls the two failed. In each case the temps raised. Our refer runs around 1 degree F in the freezer and 33 in the refer. Some real ice cream never gets rock hard. Just too much fat I guess. The drain tube must be in good working order too or warm air will cause issues.

OP, by double door I'll assume you mean one with four doors... a Nocool 12xx which is 12 cu ft in size. They are a poor design without enough cooling coils in the back so proper air flow is very important and NO they do not cool as well as one with single top and bottom doors. In a slide where you do not have a roof vent you do not get thermal syphoning so extra fans are needed to increase the air flow. A 1200 comes with two fans and in a slide two more are usually needed. The proper rear spacing (air gap) is important and in a slide if there is a dead air space above the top vent (some have now gone to 4 vents) it disrupts the air flow.
I beleive the 1200s are more fire prone because they operate at higher temps than smaller units. Many of us have replaced our 1200 cooling units with Amish ones that have more coiling coils and thicker tubing so they are less likely to rupture and cause a fire.
OP, your friend needs to find someplace that can add extra fans and make sure it has the proper air flow, especially if in a slide before deciding to replace it.

I had a problem and Dometic fixed it. Your friend needs to see if there is a fan and sensor near the top outside vent. A slide-out refrigerator requires two fans and sensors. This is critical. They must also make sure the refrigerator is well insulated and fits snugly in the slide.

if there is nothing mechanically wrong, there are some things you can do

Rv fridge freezers do not get as cold as a residential fridge.
You need to keep ice cream on the bottom at the rear.
