Friends of Jawbone Maps online

Years ago I read about the "Owlshead" project to convert the Friends of Jawbone map into an online resource and/or something that we could load onto our GPS. I checked back with the FOJ folks from time to time, but they said that funding had been an issue and it never quite got off the ground. Then weekend before last I stopped in at the Jawbone visitors' center to see if there was an updated version of the FOJ map. The map was the same, but I picked up another copy since I was there. As an afterthought I asked them if the Owlshead project ever happened. They pointed me to two awesome resources.

The Owlshead project is live and you can download an electronic copy of the FOJ map onto your GPS.

There's also an app that you can buy for $2.99 for your iPhone or Android to load the FOJ map onto your smartphone. I tried it out over the weekend and it worked pretty well. It displays the map and will load your current GPS location if you're actually within the boundaries of the map.

I played around with them in Garmin Mapsource and Google Earth and made up a route to get from Searles (Spangler Hills area) to the Indian Wells microbrewery.

We'll test it out in a couple of weeks to see how well the PC route really works out on the trail. Just like so many other things in life, it will either be awesome or horrible. Fingers crossed.

They have excellent paper maps for those of us still without GPS. I've got the Jawbone one and the two from the trails coalition for Inyo NF. $3.00 each and mail order service was very fast.
