Front Cargo Door Strut

I wish I could say I came up with this idea but I didn't. I was on the Wildcat owners Forum and someone mentioned a post they found on the Cedar Creek RV owners Forum about installing gas struts on the front cargo door of a 5th wheel.

Cedar Creek RV Owners

The guy in the article installed two struts. I started to do this and it way way too much effort to close my smaller door. I ended up with one strut and it works perfect. I can't tell you how many times I was bent over trying to find something, lift up slightly and that birds beak clip came undone and rested on my back. I ordered the struts off Ebay and did not notice they did not come with the ball mount. So I then ordered the ball mounts.

I bought the tie plate from home depot sanded and painted it white.

I used 3/16 inch rivets with washers. I turned the plate upside down and flattened the back of the rivet so it sit closer to flush.

Here is another view.

On the bottom I peeled back the insulation and used two shallow head bolts.

  • I had one installed on a Cameo door. I'm short and really don't like that type of door. It is a lot better deal.
  • I saw a retrofit kit at the RV show last year. Kind of pricey. Slam latches are also available.

Ours came with gas struts and slam latches and it really adds nicely to the rig to be able to pop a door open and have it latch by itself when you close it.
  • All basement doors on my 5er came with the gas struts...good thing about that, if one goes bad, it's not that big of a deal to replace existing strut with another one...

To the OP, very clean, good looking install you have there:)

I did this on our Komfort with the Hatchlift kits. Simple install and one of the best mods I've done. The first one was on a small door below the bed slide that could get damaged if propped open and the slide extended. I ended up doing all outside doors.

X2. Did most of the basement doors on my previous 318SAB Cougar. I plan to go with Hatchlift when I do this 5er.
