FRONT HITCH BIKE RACK

Doing some research on bike rack options and seems as if front hitch mounted rack would be the better option, but I have a couple of questions hoping I could get some help with.

Are they legal in most states?
Anyone currently using one, are you pleased with it?

I built a hitch that mounted on the pin box. Used a swagman bike rack. Works great should have done it years ago. About 1 hour to make.

Does it help block the bugs from the front cap?:@

I have the front hitch and have tried the bikes up front. I didn't care for that so I installed a receiver on the back of the fiver and that works great. Whether front or back, get a bike rack that holds by the wheels and not the top. I found that out after dragging my bikes down the road.:S Of course that was much better than having the bikes get run over by the truck.:B

That was my original thought but our spare tire is mounted on the backe bumper, we would have to use an extension to mount a rack beyond the spare and that just seems llike there would be too much bouncing around.

that the route I will go. put a receiver on the pin box and slide in a bike rack and remove when not being used.

  • I put on a front hitch to use our bike rack when we're pulling our TT. I don't think there are any legal issues with it. It works great! I had originally bought roof rack bike racks but wasn't too pleased with the stability and had to use a ladder to get them up there. I'm very happy with the front hitch arrangement.
  • We have used this for the past 2 winters during our "snowbird" travels. We are very satisfied with this arrangement.
I recommend getting a Swagman or similar bike rack that hold the Bikes in a rack for the wheels. This has worked much better than the racks that suspend the bikes from the bike frame. The wind at the front makes the bikes swing when they are hung.

Last year we traveled about 4000 miles with the bikes on the front Swagman rack. Easy to load. No wear on the bikes. No overheating issues with the truck.

    Good luck.
