I have a 06 F150 with 5.4L engine. Pull a 25' 5er 7,000# full up. Get right at 10 MPG, slightly better on dead flat ground (read Florida) little worse in mountains.
My take: diesel engine cost a LOT more, diesel fuel gets better mileage (not particularly more efficient, diesel fuel just has more BTU per gallon than gas), costs more. Well maintained gas vehicle will go 200,000 miles more or less trouble free, very few people keep a truck longer than that. Diesel will go 500,000 but not many keep a truck that long. Gas has parts and service everywhere, diesel requires specialized knowledge and specialized parts.
For most I think gas is a better choice.
