Even when there is no gas shortage, I carry in containers enough for half a tank.
And when my gauge says I'm half full, I gas up (although in my trip planning, this goes simultaneous with my lunch stops).
My next campground is no more than a full day's drive away -- 300miles max and be there by 3 pm rule.
