Generator ~ Keep the older one, buy a new one?

Agreed. I didn't think I'd ever use it but have been surprised at how often we do. When you need it, it sure is handy. Running off the propane tanks makes it easy to start in the winter and being able to flip the switch from inside is worth a lot too.

It would be less $$$ to have the old generator removed and installed into the new rig since the cost of the generator is no longer part of the equation. You stated the Onan genny is in good working order, just have factory do the generator prep on new 5er and have a reputable RV service provider install the aforementioned generator.

Obviously you could opt for neither the old or new Onan and go the portable generators route. Many utilize this method and bring only a single unit when AC usage is not expected during the trip. Extended run tanks are available reducing the chore of refueling generators. Portables also allow you to use them away from the RV for powering a variety of tools or other items requiring 120VAC.

When we purchased our current rig new from the dealer's lot it already had the Onan genny factory installed. Although we didn't really think we needed or would even utilize it at first, we have come to truly appreciate being 100% self-contained. We prefer camping without hookups and the peace of mind of being able to enjoy all the amenities our rig offers with a press of a single button is priceless, particularly under the harsh exterior conditions we often find ourselves camping in.

Since you are in Burlington KY, give a call to Cummins/Onan (Coach Care) in Elkhart IN, see if they'll put it in for you or sell you a new one. It's day's drive for you, but they install the generators in motorhomes and trailers for many of the manufacturers in the area. They aren't cheap, but are the best at what they do. I have had Coach Care work on 4 different Onan RV generators across the country and never been disappointed, well worth the $$$. When we've had dealers and a "Master" service provider, do generator work for us Coach Care straightened the mess out, maybe that's why all the $$$.

usually at least $3500 for the gen. Most on the lot RV's are not gen ready. You can control it wireless with the Onan EC-30W controller, but its also around $550. Then you need the safety enclosure, wiring and the transfer switch..

I'd call your prefered RV dealer service dept and ask them what they would charge to install a gen set, new or used.
I am in the process of installing a 7kw onan into my not gen ready FW.

On the other hand, I don't think you would get $5k extra for your RV with the gen installed.

is your current FW 30 or 50 amp service? what will u be looking at?

since you are trading the old RV in, have the dealer give you two prices for your trade in, with and without the gen set. then see how much it will cost to transfer it. I think I would just get a new one to avoid the hassle.
