Generator fuel additives.. yeah or nay

Hi gang,

I have a 2006 Keystone Raptor 2617 with the Onan 5500 gen-set. I am ashamed to say that I am just over 500 hours and am just now changing the fuel filter and spark plugs. Oil and air filter has been changed as per the maintenance directions. The fuel filter is needing replaced due to leaking but the plugs were all black/soot covered...

My question is this, does anyone have a recommendation regarding a fuel additive/cleaner for the cylinders, valves etc. I store the vehicle with stable and each year until this year it started very quickly.

I will have the plugs and filter replaced in the next few days as time allows...

Thanks in advance..

Dean
  • NAPA house brand stabilizer and cleaner for decades. Cheaper and no issues
  • My reminder just went off this morning for the monthly gen exercise. Mark a calendar or use an electronic one. I use Outlook for my calender so I set a monthly reminder. But either way, setting a reminder is the only way I can stick with it.
  • Thanks again gang, I fear however that it may be too late for cleaning or additives.. I consider myself lucky that this issue has not reared its ugly head sooner. The fuel filter(s)will need replacing, the one at the carb is not needed so an adapter is available. Likely a new fuel pump, spark plugs and carb (if I cannot get it clean). Good news is the unit is completely salvageable, I just need to not be so lax on the maintenance to avoid this in the future. Proper storage preparations and additives will be done going forward.

We have an Onan dealer here in Elkhart that is pretty good about offering suggestions and help instead of just (Bring it on in and we'll fix er up).

I'll post again as things progress.

    Thanks again.
  • Our TH has a 30 gal toy fuel tank, and 20 gal gen fuel tank. I use the marine Stabil in every fill up, and since we don't use the gen often enough I run it once a month for an hour varying with no load, up to both 15K ac uits, and back down to no load. Also I fuel our lawn mower off the toy tank so I can rotate fuel quicker than just the gen uses.

So far so good. I have considered adding Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel to help protect the steel fuel tanks, but I try to keep them full to help cut down on condensation buildup.
  • Better late than never.....your engine will thank you!!

Running it with a load every month, to exercise it, will be greatly appreciated too!:)
  • Thanks Gents.. SF seems to be quite popular and I will likely be applying an application asap. This generator in its heyday would run 12-15 hours a day at a filthy dirty drag strip, I likely should have been using this sooner but alas, hindsight is 20/20.. so my dad always said..
  • Dean, Sta-Bil does the preservative part, but nothing else. You can get a can of SeaFoam, which will keep carb or jets cleaned and preserves the gas also. I have been using the SF for years in all my engines, and have yet to have a problem. Another thing that I also do is buy ethanol free gas for all my gens, lawn equipment, blowers, and Honda outboard. My neighbor used the ethanol in his 4 stroke outboard and within no time it was at a complete stop....and abouy $1100.00 later he was on the road. There might be other products out there, but I found the SF and it has proven a winner. Safe travels.
  • I always store mine with marine satbil and use seafoam in the tank for camping season.
