I've never understood any logic behind the buy-here service here. Money is money for the service departments.
My experience is this is not the norm. Warranty work doesn't pay as much as regular labor. If the dealer didn't make a profit on the original sale, some/most might not be as willing to help as they would for one that sold originally.
