My owners manual, for my 6- bolt FW axles, says to torque to 95 ft lbs. I use a Craftsman wrench, that I do back off, to 20#s or less, after use.
I do agree, that leaving a wrench set at high torque, for long periods, will cause it to put out less torque than you are setting for.
