Grand Design 1/2 ton towable

We are considering purchasing a Grand Design Reflection 295RL fiver. This is the heaviest of their 150 lineup with (for us) the ideal layout. But I’m not sure I have enough truck to pull this rig. So hopefully some experienced members here can provide some insight.

The TV: 2014 Ford F-150 with HD/Max tow
GVWR: 8200
RAWR: 4800
GCWR: 17100
Base weight: 5860
Payload: 2212
Max trailer weight: 11000
Hitch: 125

The trailer:
GVWR: 9995
Pin weight: 1391
UVW: 8496

I am using the GVWR of the trailer as the actual weight, as it will likely be close to that at all times. I have guesstimated the loaded pin weight as 1700 by determining the percentage of dry pin weight to UVW, which is about 17% and then taking 17% of the GVWR.

So with an estimated cargo/passenger weight of 450, I have a load of about 2300, which is slightly over my payload number but well below RAWR (tires are rated to 3895).

Combined weights are 9995 + 5860 + 125 + 450 = 16430, so just under the max.

It looks to me that it should be just able to legally tow this rig. But its close...is it safe to push the limits?

  • Really could use some advice on this. Would hate to find out too late that my truck is not capable of rowing this rig.
