Hard wiring surge protector

Trying to decide where to hook up surge protector. In my front basement there is about 6 or 7 feet from partition wall to breaker panel. So I don't know if I can reach the wires. I pulled a small access board off and it is difficult to see.
I was thinking of installing it by the shore power hook up. The issue there is I don't know how much excess cable there is. The under belly is enclosed and will not be easy to open up. I did pull the shore power hook up off the 5er. There is a little excess but don't know if enough. If I put it there that is at the rear of the 5er in the rear basement.
Any suggestions?
  • With 50amp service hard wired is the way to go, especially if a powered cord reel(which could loose neutral). I put ours in the zoo behind the panel and have the remote in the switch cabinet. Loss on neutral with 50 amp service will burn up all your AC items. Not fun working in the confined space, however I am happy with the installation.

Like Norman, I installed the EMS (they are MUCH more than just a surge protector) behind the breaker panel near the converter. On our rig, this is in the buffet on the front kitchen wall across from the entry door. I turned off all power and disconnected from shore power, removed the breaker panel - which is on the end of the cabinet near the floor - and had room to work behind that.

But can you see it to observe what is going on?

That is why you buy the Progressive with the remote display :)

I did what he said above...works great.
  • Mine is the EMS-HW30C and has a remote display. The display is mounted with all of our other monitors and switches. I can read it while sitting on the sofa as long as the door that covers all that is open.

  • my friend with a class A had a metal box in a basement compartment where the existing shore line was connected. we took off the front cover with one screw, and there were three brass connectors front and center. just got a short length of adequate wire, removed shore cord from lugs, replaced with new jumper of wire, and hooked shore cord to surge protector. dont know how yours is laid out however.
I would NOT cut my existing shore cord, just buy a short length so you can easily replace to factory specs when you go to sell.

  • I disconnected the wire from the converter and connected it to the input of the surge protector and then added a wire from it’s output to the converter.

I’m not real clear on where you have room/access but it sounds like you could do something similar - disconnect wire from shore input and move it to the surge protector output...etc.
