Yeah. That place is a hoot.
It's been about ten years since we were there, so I assume it's changed quite a bit. It was a KOA back then, but I think it's private now.
It was strange to be in a camp 100% full of OHV riders, but still have designated pads, hookups, and fire pits. (The fire was kind of a let down compared to our normal desert fires.)
They have a restaurant there and supposedly the food is pretty good. I would go for their pancake breakfast if time permitted.
One thing we loved was their Roman hot baths. I don't know if they've improved them since then, but the baths were the size of a 6-person spa with a big drain plug in the bottom and a fill valve on the side. You started out with an empty concrete tub and used the fill valve to regulate the water temps and fill it up. The spring water was as hot as you made it. The whole thing was pretty rough as far as the installation went, but it sure was nice to soak in the hot tub after a day of riding. I don't think I'd ever even taking a bathing suit on a riding trip before.
When we were done, we just pulled the plug and the tub drained down to the Salton Sea.
The riding was pretty good. We didn't hardly scratch the surface because we got stuck with kind of a weird group.
We've been meaning to go back for years, but it's a pretty long drive for us, right through the belly of the beast on a Friday evening. Next time I think I'd just take Friday off and drive out in the morning.
I just remembered why we didn't have a more full riding weekend. We wanted to ride a second day on Sunday, but the rain kicked up and was an absolute deluge. We've never packed up so fast. As we beat it out of there, CalTrans was coming the other direction to close the road because of flooding. I wish they had signaled us to turn around, but they waved and we kept on our way. That road along the foothills beside Salton Sea was a rollercoaster of dips, and all the dips turned into silty rivers and flash floods. Our kids thought it was hilarious, but I was pretty scared. We never did manage to clean all that mud out of the cargo holds in our old WW. It was filthy.
Good time though.
