I too use a front goal post to support my Yakima cross bar and saddles. I didnt use the goal posts offered by Yakima or Thule as the seemed extremely light weight, so I welded up my own.
As you can see in the pic, I also use a Yakima rack for our bikes. The rear wheels sit on top of a Highway box. A surprising plus related to the box, is all I have to do is unclip the rear wheels on the bikes, and the box opens just fine with the tires rolling as the lid opens.
